Homecoming: Advanced Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Welcomes William P. Polio, M.D.

Coming home after completing his training, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Polio has begun practicing at Advanced Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine as of Oct. 5. Dr. Polio joins the expert team at the region’s most preferred orthopedic practice, working alongside his father, Joseph L. Polio, M.D., and brother, Joseph A. Dr. Polio recently received one of the highest national honors in orthopedic shoulder surgery as a leading author for a research paper that won the Charles S. Neer Award of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation. As a lifelong athlete, Dr. Polio has also attained many athletic achievements. He is a former Kentucky state champion in cross-country, Wendy’s High School Heisman winner and national champion for triathlon. His earned roles have included serving as a 4.0 salutatorian at Owensboro Catholic High School and as a 4.0 valedictorian at Centre College. During medical school, Dr. Polio was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society for his academic achievement.

With extensive training in sports medicine, Dr. Polio has expertise in a wide array of advanced procedures, including:

  • ACL and multi-ligament knee reconstruction.
  • Femoroacetabular impingement of the hip.
  • General orthopedic trauma.
  • Meniscus repair of the knee.

  • Total and partial knee replacement.
  • Total and reverse shoulder replacement.

Dr. Polio earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. As a student and medical student, he became a member of multiple honor societies. At the University of Louisville, he went on to complete his residency training in orthopedic surgery. He then continued his training to advance his expertise by completing a yearlong, exclusive fellowship in sports medicine at Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee.
