The sources of joint pain can vary widely, and the degree and kind of pain can look different for each patient. From arthritis to joint degeneration, joint pain limits a person’s potential for an active and healthy lifestyle. It is important to receive the appropriate care when other conservative measures, such as medication, do not provide adequate relief for the hip or knee

Our doctors and staff make every effort to implement the most advanced techniques and technologies to offer our patients the best possible orthopedic care. Mako SmartRobotics Technology allows for our joint replacement surgeons to more precisely treat patients who suffer from hip or knee arthritis and get them the relief they need and deserve.

Our Mako experts, Dr. Joseph L. Polio and Dr. Geoffrey Hulse, have undergone extensive specialty training in robotic- and navigation-assisted hip and knee surgeries. They specialize in assessing, diagnosing, and treating hip- and knee-related injuries and conditions with Mako technology.

Mako SmartRobotics Technology comes with the following benefits:

  • Faster recovery than a traditional knee or hip replacement
  • Reduced risk of complications—our surgeons know more and cut less
  • Unique implant design for natural-feeling, normal joint movement
  • Tailored surgical plan based on your unique anatomy for a longer-lasting joint

If you are experiencing osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease, you may be a candidate for a Mako robotic total knee, total hip, or partial knee replacement. Dr. Polio and Dr. Hulse will recommend the necessary plan of action based on the condition of your joints.

How It Works

Mako technology is used in preoperative planning to provide our joint replacement specialists with a 3D model of your anatomy that enhances the operation with precision and accuracy.

In preoperative planning, Mako allows Dr. Polio and Dr. Hulse to create personalized joint replacement plans to follow during the surgery. The 3D CT-based planning software gives them the ability to predefine the boundaries of your joint replacement operation. When it is time for the procedure, Mako’s AccuStop™ technology will assist our doctors in remaining in those boundaries.

Mako does not make any decision on its own or move without our experts’ guidance. Dr. Polio and Dr. Hulse perform the surgery and use the robotic arm to help position the implant.
